About the Project

Hey, I’m Lutfi Retno Wahyudyanti.

For a long time, I called myself a storyteller. I loved writing and taking photographs then sharing those stories with others. Over time, storytelling became my passion until I ran a video production studio, creating films and visual content for clients. While I still enjoy the work, I realized I needed a space where I could share my own observations, free from deadlines and client briefs.

This website is that space.

I am attracted by the ways our world is changing. Growing up as a bookworm in Indonesia, I read many stories about our cultural diversity. Every region has its own foods, architecture, traditions, and ways of life, all shaped by local environments and histories. I was particularly attracted by a phrase often used to describe this as local wisdom.

As I began traveling, researching, and documenting across Indonesia, I had the opportunity to interact with other cultures. What I found was more complex than the stories I had read. Traditions were not frozen in time. They were constantly adapting, transforming, and sometimes taking on new form.

Globalization, migration, economic change, population growth, and shifting patterns of consumption are reshaping communities everywhere. In many places, climate change is also altering landscapes and livelihoods that have existed for generations.

Yet these changes are often overlooked. Popular media, tourism campaigns, and social media creators frequently romanticize traditional cultures, presenting them as timeless and untouched. In reality, the situation is far more dynamic. Sometimes, I describe it as tragically beautiful.

Through years of research, writing, and documentary production, I have also seen how misinformation and oversimplified narratives are accepted as truth simply because they are repeated by many. This blog is my attempt to look beyond those narratives. Here, I write about cultures in transition, disappearing knowledge, environmental change, and the complex ways people adapt to a rapidly shifting world. I am not trying to preserve a romantic image of the past, but to understand what is changing and why.

Soon, I will share stories and field notes on Instagram at @ashiftingworld. If any of these topics resonate with you, feel free to get in touch. Perhaps our paths will cross, and someday, we can explore, learn, and share stories. I am open to collaboration if other storyteller would contribute their writing or videos here.
